A central question that propels my studio practice is, “Can an artwork make itself?” I speculate how a drawing might look if an object drew it. I imagine what a sculpture might be like if it was willed into being by felt or rope. I’m determined to reach beyond my own intentions, as seemingly impossible as that may sound, and I attempt this is by allowing existing artworks to create new ones.
I’ve been cooperating with a hand-knotted nylon net, tracing and translating it to make drawings and sculptures. Cut-outs from a collage are used in a sculpture, and the shadows from a sculpture dictate the form of a drawing. Elements from one piece are resized, inverted, repeated, and even cannibalized to create new compositions. This circuitous process generates works that are related to one another, similar to a family tree.
This solo exhibition is the result of a year of speculation and experimentation fueled by productive questions: What would a future look like without anthropocentric desire? Can I navigate my surroundings and work with materials in a more intuitive way? How can abstraction shift the power dynamic between viewer and object?
