JEREMY BAILEY
Jeremy Bailey, Head Gesture I, C-Print, 2016, h 29 x w 50"
Pari Nadimi Gallery is pleased to present Next Big Thing a solo exhibition by "Famous new media artist" Jeremy Bailey.
In recent years technology has progressed to make it possible to record our world and ourselves in three dimensions or more. Software companies are already applying these advances to allow us to use body gestures to control increasingly intuitive interfaces. The body captured by these devices is no longer a flat representation of reality but rather a cloud of data. Perhaps not entirely unlike the cubist body or the abstract expressionist body, this is a body free from representative constraints. When combined in series across time this body behaves like a paintbrush; faces smear, hands ripple. When distributed across a network with data from others these brushstrokes evoke eternal life, however when captured, rendered or printed, they evoke the opposite - after all, data unrefreshed is dead. A speculative identity emerges from this network, a projected identity that flows through everyone and everything. For Bailey's next solo exhibition at Pari Nadimi Gallery, Next Big Thing, he will present new gestural paintings and software authored by this new identity.
Bailey's selected recent exhibitions and performances include Electronic Superhighway (2016-1966), at Whitechapel Gallery London(a show that has received significant press attention including a feature interview with Bailey in The Guardian UK and The Creators Project who listed Bailey among 5 Experimental Video Artists to Keep an Eye On in 2016), You Are Here: Art After the Internet at ICA London, which coincided with a publication featuring Bailey's work, Life Feed: New Works by Jeremy Bailey and Antoine Catala, at The New Museum in New York, The Future is Now, Media Arts, Performance and Identity after Nam June Paik, at Tate Liverpool and Faceless at Quartier21Vienna and Mediamatic Amsterdam. Recent commissions include works for The Southbank Centre in London, FACT Liverpool and The New Museum New York.
Bailey has been extensively exhibiting and performing nationally and internationally since 2003. Including Dadamachinima, Transmediale (Berlin, Germany), Rhizome's Seven on Seven (New York, USA), Devotion Gallery, (New York, USA), Domain, ZER01 San Jose Biennial, (San Jose, USA), BWNY, Albright Knox, (Buffalo, USA), Colours of the Spectrum Art Metropole (Toronto, ON), Space Invaders, NIMk, (Amsterdam, Netherlands), The Jeremy Bailey Show, HTTP Gallery (London, UK) , Festival International du Film sur lʼArt - Musee d'Art Contemporain (Montreal, QC), Definitely Independent, Transmediale, Akademie der Kuenste (Berlin, Germany) and many more.
Born in 1979 Bailey received his MFA in Video Art from Syracuse University (2006) and an undergraduate degree in Visual Studies from the University of Toronto (2002). "Since the early noughties Bailey has ploughed a compelling, and often hilarious, road through the various developments of digital communications technologies. Ostensibly a satire on, and parody of, the practices and language of "new media," the jocose surface of Bailey's work hides an incisive exploration of the critical intersection between video, computing, performance, and the body." (Morgan Quaintance, Rhizome).
