Christopher Cutts Gallery is pleased to present the work of Max Johnston spanning his 25 year relationship with the gallery.
Max Johnston creates material-based work; exploring the materiality of paint and the inherent limitations of paint on a two-dimensional surface. Material-based work refers to the objectivity of the medium being elementary to the manufacturing of a painting. However in a material-based work it’s natural subordinate role is eclipsed by the mediums physicality and inventiveness. The subject of the painting is the paint.
Johnston concerns himself with the conceptual play of creating a realization of depth and three-dimensionality on an inherently two-dimensional surface – a stretched canvas. His work oscillates between two perceptional realities; the illusory nature of being pulled into space while simultaneously pushed to the foreground of the picture plane. .
