OVERVIEW :
Over the past 30 years, Galerie Greta Meert established itself as one of Brussels’ leading contemporary art galleries. Founded in 1988 as Galerie Meert Rihoux, it was subsequently renamed in 2006.In 1988, Galerie Greta Meert opened with Thomas Struth’s first international showing followed by exhibitions with Robert Mangold, Richard Tuttle, Louise Lawler, John Baldessari and Hanne Darboven. In 1992, the gallery presented Isa Genzken’s early sculptures and started to show the work of Donald Judd. These first exhibitions demonstrate the gallery’s aim to bring forth the work of these innovative artists at a time when they were still relatively unknown in Belgium. From the very beginning, one of the main focuses of the gallery has been on Minimal and the Conceptual Art.

ABOUT EXHIBITION : CORNERED
Focusing on installations in museums, galleries, and private collections, Louise Lawler investigates how we, as viewers, perceive art. Perception often deviates from intention; context is all-important and is reexamined, illuminated, and rendered more complex on various levels. Divided between the ground floor and first floor, CORNERED features two new large-scale in situ vinyl installations that engage in dialogue with other recent photographs.
Louise Lawler photographs not only the artworks themselves but also their surrounding spaces and details, such as labels, furniture, and lighting. By doing so, she explores the relationship between art, exhibition spaces and viewer, and, in CORNERED, particularly within the context of the gallery. Lawler offers a profound reflection on the art world, challenging traditional notions of art perception for all everyone concerned.

ABOUT ARTISTS : Louise Lawler
b. 1947 in Bronxville, New York, USA Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, USA Louise Lawler raises questions about art — about the circumstances of its production, circulation as well as the institutional, economic and ideological frameworks that support its modes of existence and display. Louise Lawler’s work primarily occurs in the act of photographing artworks in the setting of museums, galleries, auction houses, storage facilities and collector’s homes. Meticulously cropping and producing images as objects, she plays with a simple yet effective photographic repertoire that includes both extremely small and extremely large images occasionally manipulated or distorted to follow precise conceptual principles. One of the foremost members of the Pictures Generation, Louise Lawler emerged in the late 1970s with peers such as Sarah Charlesworth, Cindy, Sherman, Barbara Kruger and Sherrie Levine at a time when postmodern theory was coming to define the art world in New York propelled by critics like Douglas Crimp and Craig Owens. Louise Lawler’s work is notable for its rigorously feminist agenda, anti-war engagement and commitment to institutional critique and collaboration.
