ABOUT EXHIBITION : Trouble in Paradise
Deborah Sengl has always been interested in what is not visible and in the unfathomable aspects of our society. In her new "Trouble in Paradise" series she goes a step further. She cites famous film scenes, for example, from "American Beauty". What at first appears to be harmless and idyllic is disrupted by an approaching danger. The different levels act as proxies for worlds that are usually more closely interwoven than we would like to admit. The situation is similar in the "Inside Out" series: the protagonists believe themselves to be in their protected spaces – but one's own four walls can be more transparent than we think. Oversized, ostensibly peaceful observers peek into the respective refuges. Whether this involves a physical or virtual danger or not is left to free interpretation.
In addition to this, scenes from "The Last Days of Mankind" are exhibited in response to the present geopolitical situation. There is hardly anyone who has captured the inhumanity and absurdity of war as precisely as Karl Kraus with his "tragedy in 5 acts with prelude and epilogue". In her to date largest body of work, Sengl reacts with an inimitable sense for Kraus' text and artistically interprets scene excerpts and dialogues with preserved rat specimens and drawings. Other scenes can be seen as of mid-June in the Jewish Museum Vienna under the title "The Last Days of Democracy".
