It is with great pleasure that Tristian Koenig announces the opening of Remake, Remodel, Retouch - a solo exhibition of new works by Melbourne-born, London-based Ry David Bradley. Compromised of singular paintings produced through Bradley’s signature use of the dye-sublimation process, the new works foreground the use of image metadata gleaned from found digital files Bradley sources from the internet, which act as the starting point for his paintings.
Ry David Bradley’s suite of new paintings that comprise Remake, Remodel, Retouch start life as ‘amateur photography’ images sourced from online photographic repositories such as Tumblr. Through the process of using software and altering each image beyond recognition, and outputting these files to a variety of fabricators, the resulting paintings are extended beyond the initial documentary nature of the photographic image, into dreamlike and liminal spaces.
A noticeable feature within each painting is a small date and time stamp buried within each composition. Derived from the metadata contained within each source image, the stamp provides information, which divorced of context, proves enigmatic. Is it the time the source photograph was taken, or when the painting was last edited? Viewed in contrast to On Kawara’s Today paintings, which carefully chronicle the day they were produced, Bradley’s ADD PAINTINGS suggest a more concerted measurement of time - down to the second, as well as today's obsession with metrics and analytics
