David Thomas was born in Belfast in 1951 and arrived in Australia in 1958. He studied Art and Education at the University of Melbourne, graduating in the 1970s, before travelling extensively throughout Asia and living in Europe. Upon returning to Melbourne, Thomas held his first solo exhibition with Powell Street Gallery in 1982. Thomas’ paintings, photo-paintings and painting/installations exploit colour, humour and duration in composite ways, enabling knowing and feeling to be considered. His work is informed by an engagement with the formal and conceptual concerns of both Eastern and Western monochrome painting.
