Tristian Koenig is delighted to announce the opening of We We Kojo - a solo exhibition of new work by Samson Martin. We We Kojo is the phonetic pronunciation of Huehuecoyotl, the ‘‘very old coyote” of Aztec mythology and god of music, dance, mischief and song.
Huehuecoyotl is depicted as a hybrid of man and coyote and is a well known figure of Meso-American iconography within popular culture. Possessing the ability to change gender and possessing both good and evil qualities, for Martin Huehuecoyotl is a metonymy that describes an alternative model of viewing creative production.
Influenced by free jazz; specifically in the titling of his work, but also in composition, Martin’s practice makes liberal use of surface materiality, the modernist grid and tenants of Greenbergian Modernism, with shout outs to traditional Australian Aboriginal cultural practices, outsider art, craft; such as weaving, tapestry, quilting and needle point, and an engagement with the canon of Western art history - from Dürer and the Bauhaus to Sol LeWitt and Phillip Taffe.
Martin suggests a non-hierarchical material and conceptual foundation belies his practice. Each work is composed of a multiplicity of micro-gestures, all of equal value, that discern difference at a larger macro-scale. This combination of equivalence and of somewhat perversely denying the hand of the artist, yet displaying evidence of its passing everywhere, almost as a raison d’être, is a curious hybridity. An entropic harmony of sorts.
