For the performance Corpo RanfLA: Terra Cruiser, the artist rafa esparza transforms his body into a lowrider cyborg, inviting people in his community to 'ride' him. The remnants of the performance—a retrofitted 25-cent pony ride structure—remains on display during the fair.
The performance revisits a collaborative work from 2018—with Mario Ayala, Tanya Melendez, Paul Marcus Rodrigez, and Fabian Guerrero—to paint his body in the style of a lowrider car and document his biosyncretic body in Elysian Park, a historic and contemporary site of lowrider as well as gay cruising in Los Angeles. Honoring the vernacular art/technology of lowrider culture, which has been stigmatized via the 'NO CRUISING' signs throughout East Los Angeles—even while being coopted by mainstream culture in recent years—esparza recorded a script for riders to listen to privately while riding him. What journeys do they hope to embark on? What do they want to ride for?
