DC Moore is pleased to present, at The Armory Show, an exhibition of Whitfield Lovell's The Spell Suite. Comprised of eleven works, our Armory Show presentation is the first time they will be exhibited. For these large-scale assemblages, Lovell utilizes conte crayon to compose exquisitely drawn, anonymous African American faces, juxtaposing each with a found object.

DC Moore will present, for The Armory Show, a solo exhibition of photographer Duane Michals, known for his work with series, multiple exposures, and text, particularly focusing on his series Empty New York. Comprised of rare gelatin silver prints dated from 1964, the series focuses exclusively on Michals' early exploration of transitional early morning moments in New York City shops, parks, subway cars, and train stations.
Also on view will be Michals' photographs of artists and writers such as Willem de Kooning, René Magritte, Andy Warhol, Joan Didion and others, as well as his photographic sequences.
Over the past six decades, Michals has made significant, creative strides in the field of photography. During the 1960s, an era heavily influenced by photojournalism, Michals began manipulating his photographs to emphasize narrative, a practice borrowed from cinema's frame-by-frame format. Michals also began incorporating text as a key component in his works, adding another dimension to the images' meaning and giving voice to Michals' singular musings, which are poetic, tragic, and humorous—often all at once.
Michals recently had a career retrospective at The Morgan Library & Museum, The Illusions of the Photographer: Duane Michals at The Morgan (2019-2020).
