Booth 54
We are pleased to invite you to the 21st edition of Art Rotterdam, 5-9 February in Van Nellefabriek, Rotterdam. This year, we will show new selfportraits by Philip Akkerman, a life size marble airco by Casper Braat, wallpaper paintings by Erik de Bree, new photographs by Popel Coumou and a neon work by Thijs Zweers.
PHILIP AKKERMAN
Philip Akkerman paints exclusively self-portraits, five days a week from 9 to 5, almost forty years now. He uses the technique of the Old Masters, following three steps: first a drawing, then the division of dark and light in monochrome and at last the colours are added. The technique is always the same, just as the subject. Aside from that, Akkerman works intuitively. He does 'whatever feels good'.
CASPER BRAAT
Boxy metal air conditioners that hang from windows have become a quintessential element of urban landscapes. Now that the world is getting warmer, more of these machines are obstructing facades and scaring street scenes. These appliances tend to have the same design, no matter the brand.
Airco re-imagines the iconic window air conditioning unit as a beautiful marble block, transformed into a timeless sculpture.
ERIK DE BREE
Playfulness is key in all of his works. Cheerful color and unforeseen lines reflect childlike nonsensical purity. The process of the making is an essential part of the final visual result, in the sense that you can still see the buildup of layers and imagine movements of the ripping off. Opposed to structured and calculated proportions, in the works of De Bree it is the chance that decide its outcome. They are celebrations of the unpredictable which is life.
POPEL COUMOU
By using a camera to capture carefully crafted collages she is able to find romantic notions in the most abstract of artistic gestures. She suggests an immersive universe held together by tape, paper and a heartfelt suspension of disbelief. The grain of the analogue image pulls together shapes and colors she collected from wildly different sources.
THIJS ZWEERS
Where first white random markings where the distortions of the image, in his latest works, Thijs has replaced the white blanks for colorful neon lights. The electronic addition to the drawing enforces the notion of a digital image, in spite of the traditional technique he uses for the drawing.
