Detlef Orlopp's photographs always appear in series that show structures of landscape topographies. Featuring mountains or lakes, his landscapes are full of details that take up the entire picture; with their horizon elevated, they lack any form of human presence. In a discrete and reserved way, the photographer registers structural occurrences between black and white, in which romantic experiences of the sublime intensify and refer to something primal and earthly.
Detlef Orlopp captures a perspective that categorically excludes a hierarchy of meaning. The result is “an almost consistently smooth structure of signs produced by the light, which gives every contour on the ground a hard shadow” (Peter Weiermair). In the aloofness that renounces any kind of intervention, there is a void and calmness associating Orlopp’s concrete photography with a transcendence completely disengaged from faith.
This year Detlef Orlopp has his 80th anniversary. With our solo exhibition at BOOTH A26 we present only rare vintages photos out of 50 years of his work.
Timm Rautert’s >>Deutsche in Uniform (Germans in Uniform)<< was originally conceived as an independent project. All the photos were taken in 1974, the only exception being a double portrait showing members of a student fraternity. Some of them were first published in Zeitmagazin (No. 11, 7 March 1975), which had begun to feature Rautert’s documentary photo essays in the previous year. The commentary was written by Michael Naumann, who would later become the first cultural affairs secretary of the Federal Republic of Germany but, at the time, was a founding staff member of this widely-read illustrated magazine. The complete series was first exhibited in 1980 in the Fotografische Sammlung of the Museum Folkwang in Essen. It was part of a series of small shows devoted to ‘Portraits aus Nachkriegsdeutschland’ [portraits from post-war Germany], which was curated by Ute Eskildsen. Steidl edited a monograph in 2006. A new enlarged version of the previous book is in print, now including the black-and-white version also used for Zeit-Magazin and some other material. The text has been slightly revised and expanded for the purpose. The whole color series of >>Deutsche in Uniform<< and the vintages black and white series (exhibited for the first time) are on view at PRISMES P12.
